Moving Tips

Avoid Common Moving Mistakes

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Pack

If you do not give yourself enough time to pack properly, there is a larger chance that you will waste space, meaning more boxes to move, store and unpack.

Delicate or Sharp Items

Another common problem is that items are not properly wrapped and protected. You want to be sure to wrap fragile items (i.e. glasses and plates) securely so that they have less chance of breaking. Wrapping sharp objects can keep them from damaging other items, and the objects are safer for you to handle.

When packing dishes and glassware, layer crushed packing paper on the bottom of the box. You can also wrap items to be packed with paper and layer crushed paper in between items. Dishes should be packed standing up, not laid flat. Glassware should be packed upside down, not on its side.

The Trick to a Well Packed Box

When packing your items in boxes, try to use these tips. You should pack heavier items in smaller boxes and lighter items in larger boxes. A box that is packed too heavily can cause the items within to fall through the bottom. Also, when boxes are too heavy, you have an increased risk of injuring yourself while lifting them. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Boxes should be packed tightly. If there is extra room within the box, fill it with crushed paper or linens. Remember to tape the top and bottom of each box entirely, imparting added stability to the box and decreasing the chances for items to fall out and be damaged.

Dressers and Drawers

If you are moving items with drawers like a cabinet or dresser, be sure to remove items from inside. This not only decreases the weight of these items, but also lowers the chance of the drawers sliding open while in transit or being carried. Another good tip is to tape the empty drawers so that the piece of furniture itself is protected, as well as anything that an open drawer could hit.

Be advised if you will be packing your items for our moving services:

  • Boxes should not be more than 50 lbs.

  • Write your name on each box, along with the room it should be placed in.

  • There is no need to write your address on the boxes.

  • Although messages can be hard to read on each box, stickers marking fragile can be placed on the boxes.
